Bhangar in South 24 Parganas district, which was hit by violence during the panchayat polls, could soon come under the jurisdiction of Kolkata Police, sources at Nabanna, the secretariat, said.
According to officials, Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday asked Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Kumar Goyal to include Bhangar under his jurisdiction and also suggested making the area a separate division of Kolkata Police.
At present, Bhangar and Kashipur police stations fall under Baruipur police district of South 24 Parganas.
“The chief minister is concerned over the situation in Bhangar. She feels that if Kolkata Police is handed over the area, the law and order can be restored,” a senior officer of the Home Department said.
Reacting to the reports, ISF MLA from Bhangar Naushad Siddiqui said, “The CM has indirectly admitted that police failed to control the situation in Bhangar. If Kolkata Police restores the situation, we will welcome it.”
CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty said, “The TMC failed to grab power in Bhangar. So, the CM wants to use police force to take control over the area.”
